Notice of half-masting: National Day of Mourning

Flags at Town of Vegreville facilities will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Monday, April 28, 2025, in recognition of the National Day of Mourning and in honour of workers killed, injured, or suffered illness as a result of work-related incidents.   

The National Day of Mourning is observed each year in Canada on April 28. 

The observance began in 1984 and it was officially declared an annual day of remembrance the following year by the Canadian Labour Congress. In 1991, the day became a national observance, when the Workers’ Mourning Day Act was passed.

According to the Workers' Compensation Board - Alberta, in Alberta alone in 2024, 203 Alberta workers lost their lives as a result of their employment. Each loss has a profound impact on families, friends, employers, and co-workers.
